Acceptance Speech?

Mon Mar 1, 2004, 2:05 PM
What's my secret? It's not meant to be a secret.

Every single image is a challenge. It's not enough to simply like it. It's important to figure out why?

Why is this so amazing? Powerful? Unexpected? Overwhelming? Exquisite? Unique? Mesmerizing?

Or, with "middle-level work," how is this successful? What is especially well-done, or original, or clever? Where is the craft most innovative or exemplary? When would something like this not work as well as it does here?

If something seems particularly unexpected, is it a detriment, or exactly a counter-intuitive asset? (Spotting counter-intuitive assets is like wrapping one's hands around magic...)

Every single piece is a learning experience, a chance to recognize something useful. (I've joked for a long time that you might sometimes catch me "taking notes." ) An opportunity to learn from our collective success, and yes, from our mistakes too.

And most of all, tell one another when we're doing something right. That seems so much to me what this site should be about.

There's so much more to an image than the result. In every work, there are countless deliberate decisions made by the artist, and/or happy accidents perhaps even unnoticed by the artist.

I just look for 'em.

And they thrill me to find them.

____________

I'm no comment-snob. I think straightforward expressions of enthusiasm and support are terribly important, and one of the deeply beautiful things about this place. A whole site full of "keep doing what you're doing" is an incredible venture, and quantity of enthusiasm is an irreplacably good thing here.

But when someone has really worked hard on something, made all those decisions and produced something earnest, we would always want someone to notice all that work, as much as the result.

(I should shout out a quick thanks here to those who comment my work - I feel blessed to receive some of the very best comments on DA.)

Wish I could be that someone twenty times more often than I am. In fact, if I have any regret about today's commemoration, it's only that it's gonna be a terrible month to live up to it.

My carpal tunnels are still in bad shape, typing is still treacherous, and I'm gonna be jamming like mad to get all my prints ready for the show in April. This month's gonna be an all-time low for my participation here, and now that feels a lot more unfortunate.

But make no mistake, I am thrilled almost to tears. (Imagine the look on my face this morning when I hadn't even had my espresso yet...)

I deeply believe we are all of us making history here, that in twenty years, or fifty, or a hundred, "Art History" will celebrate the most important movement in turn-of-the-21st-Century art.

A global reawakening of both art and art appreciation, in a thriving community and context, in which every single interested party is welcome and encouraged to be an artist. A critic. A sponsor. A difference...

I believe very deeply in this "long view" of the history we are all of us making here.

And so I am just so deeply proud and thankful that the powers-that-be have seen fit to carve my name into it.

And tell me I've been doing something right.

Bless every single one of you who had anything to do with this, and every well-wish besides.

Well, I'm completely new to you, but I applaud all those who are responsible... I get the notion that you've already lived up to your accolade! and if it's a low month of participation, that is only because of something so important to otherwise remove your attention slightly. I also love your thoughs on the history this site is making - and I'm more than inclined to agree with you. I do like your writing style..
Congratulations from a complete stranger! :)

Make a worthwhile comment!
you know who had anything to do with this?

Yourself.

This is the month for you to enjoy the recognition. Not to show people why you've received it.
You deserve it, and so it's most understandable that you take care of your problems and the show, and do not try to be more than the great person and deviant you really are.

Again, congratulations.

Love the community. deviantART.

You forgot to thank the academy. :lmao: Sorry, I watched the oscars last night. This is a much better acceptance speech than any of them had, I must say.

Congratulations, a million times over. You so deserve this. Your comments have done so much for me. They've made me feel better about my own work, while at the same time inspiring me to do so much better. It's a really great feeling to see that someone maybe understands what I was trying to do with a piece of art and who can appreciate it for what it is.

I know I've said this lots of times before, but I really mean it so I'll say it again: Don't worry about commenting. The art will still be there for you when you return. Work as much as you need to for your art show but don't hurt yourself. They gave you this honor not to see if you could live up to it, but because you've already proven yourself worthy of it. And if you feel the need to live up to it anyway, you can always do that after your art show and after you can type more comfortably. :) Don't stress. Don't worry. Even while injured you've given me the best comments I've ever gotten on this website.

DON'T step on the mome raths.
As I read that I got the feeling that I was sitting down in the audience (In the front row of course!), looking up at you and swelling with pride!

I am glad that you are being cautious with your typing still and sticking to your main objective – getting those prints ready. The award is for what you have DONE for this place... And I think, for what you will never stop doing. You're like the 100th monkey or something. Uh... I mean, you've started something and it's catching on!

Bloody hell. What I'm TRYING to say in my own, unique, gibbering way... is that you’re an inspiration to us all.

And I don't feel like you could ever be thanked enough!

Yeah, that'll do ^^;

*Swells with so much pride that she floats away into the distance, a big, bloated human balloon*

Enjoy this month in the spotlight. It's right on time; now you will get the attention you deserve through the extra linkage in the main interface, while you can just sit back and take care of your hands. :)

You've earned it, you deserve it. This is DA karma, the good side.

Hear us clapping, and smile with pride, because there's nothing wrong with it. :)

Wow... I've been following you from almost the very begining and you know I mean that. I've always made a special effort to veiw and comment constructively on everything that you do. You blow me away with with every step. You've innovation and your self tought abilities have brought you beyond what any digital darkroom photographer work to become. You've almost brought a tear to my eye... almost.
I could only hope to every acheive your amazing ability within this life time (this from the lowly deviant that took 3 years to get 5,000 page view lol). You are elite.
For all of this in more I will be dedicating my most extensive post yet (comming soon) to you and all your glory.

congratulations. There is no one who desirves it more in my books.

You know as well as I do that half the science to this place is just finding the really good people. I will always be sooooooo glad we found one another so long ago as we did.
