Open Letter to HBO

Mon Jun 12, 2006, 5:15 PM
Mr. Albrecht and Ms. Strauss (Chairman/CEO and President, respectively),

I am shocked, horrified, and dismayed at such abysmally wretched judgement.

I pay $75 a month for cable television, ONLY for the purpose of enjoying and supporting Sunday night HBO. But it seems I will save that money, for not being able to conscientiously support HBO any longer.

To abandon a creator midstream, who has given you such success and accolade, is the end of your artistic credibility. (Especially while you would continue to support such ponderous excrement as Rome in its stead. Do you not know exceptional programming by comparison?)

I will miss The Wire and Entourage, both wonderful for their own merits, but they aren't worth continuing to support you whom would truncate a vision so lively, profound, and brilliant as Deadwood. Especially when Milch's vision requires only one more season to conclude. It is betrayal, plain and simple, toward him and his team's hard work. Treachery.

Have you even *watched* it? Do you have any idea what you're even suspending?

If so (as hard as it seems to believe), are you treating a genius as you yourself would want to be treated?

I will save my $75 a month, and turn off TV entirely, rather than afford you any possible implication of my tolerance. I've got too much respect for Milch and Deadwood, and I'm baffled completely that you yourself do not.

Why do you even show up to work each day, if not to see Deadwood through to fruition? Is it just a paycheck for you? Lacking any heart, soul, or artistic merit? (Why not just sell cars for a living?) Where is your sense of your own role in cinematic history?

I will enjoy the third season as best I can, laced with bitterness, and then promptly cancel my cable entirely. I thought you were the good guys in the wasteland of television, a champion of artistic merit. I never dreamed I was so gravely mistaken.

p.s. (for you here at DA)

I learned lacerating indignance from my mother. I pale in comparison.

... just like FOX and their hush-hush decapitation of the series "Firefly," those jackasses in their glass towers wouldn't know good storytelling if it bit them on the hiatus... it's a travesty...

HBO Latin America never showed that program over here, it seems that it is a good show, I'm curious to know what's all about.

And speaking of HBO Latin America, they still don't get on air the new Soprano's season, I guess I should make my own open letter because I'm getting desperate.

Tv is going from bad to worse, People & Arts is turning into another reality shows crappy channel and Hallmark is showing terrible movies such as The musketeer..., damn people, I wonder if they even took the time to read The Tree Musketeers!

Good luck with your fight

TV itself is ignorant.

It seems the disgusting and ignorant is taking over all of TV, not just HBO (which, I believe, Knology doesn't even offer unless you pay seperately *changing to DirectTV as soon as possible, since it's the only other provider offered*) Good luck to you and your cause. I'm still mad at Showtime for cancelling Dead Like Me. Every time something I find interesting is on... it's cancelled.

This is the first I have heard of this dire news.
Thusly, I have just sent an electronic post of my most extreme displeasure to HBO concerning the matter,
and I am also going to cancel my HBO subscription come September.
The strangest part of this is, that my wife and I have already been discussing the exlcusion of HBO
from our bill of fare as of late because of it's poor and decidedly crappy programming,
but had decided to keep it around pretty much just because of Deadwood.
By the by, where, pray tell, do the muckity mucks at HBO live? Yankton?
Be advised that it is with the outmost level of my self control that I do not use the colorful jargon
of Swearengen himself in this matter.

Another guy with a strong mother? :)

I've never had cable and I watch maybe two hours' TV per week, so I'll just be staying out of this. Oh, and I live in Australia :P

You guard your name pretty closely, don't you?

I just THIS MINUTE came from watching episodes 2&3 of season 2 on dvd...
This might be the best thing that TV's ever done-- the funniest thing about the language is that, for every lacerating vulgarity, there's reems and reems of language that's damn near Shakespearean; and when it comes to pure story arrising from fascinating characters, this is it, right here.
Your outrage is shared once again, Thorne...
